Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) comes to Woonona Medical Practice!
MBSR brings the principles of mindfulness meditation into everyday life by teaching specific skills and practices that can be incorporated into daily life to help break cycles of anxiety, stress, unhappiness and exhaustion.
This 8 week evidence based program leads to measurable changes in brain regions associated with memory, sense of self, empathy, and stress as well as improving the immune response. The MBSR course was first developed by Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. It has been widely researched over the past 30 years and is at the cutting edge of integrative and preventative medicine. It is the gold-standard of secular mindfulness based approaches for mental and physical health. Catalyst Series 20 The Mindfulness Experiment in iview researches some outcomes on participants during an MBSR course in Sydney in 2018. All qualified MBSR teachers have a personal meditation and movement practice, attend yearly silent meditation retreats, have undergone intensive teacher training and have ongoing peer supervision.

You spend quite a bit of time during the course really investigating your mind and body in the company of people whose lives and discoveries over the eight weeks give you something profound - a feeling of connection and belonging that you haven't felt for a while. You spend time listening deeply, not only to your own experience of sensations, thinking, feeling and action, but you get to know your patterns in a way that is tender and caring but also empowering and transforming. You find out that you can do things differently to make serious changes in how you experience your five year old, your boss, your insomnia, your pain, your anxiety, your depression. You discover both subtle and big changes in how you want to spend your time. You get some confidence in your own goodness and the goodness of others - which can be a rare experience these days.
MBSR courses offer depth, safety, continuity and connection with a dedicated, experiences teacher to help you engage with the heart of the matter - so that you can find more resilience, effectiveness and authority in your life. While a short course, app of workshop may offer a taste of mindfulness, it is unlikely to provide you with the experience, space and time to develop your own practice, which is what leads to the outcomes you probably want and are truly possible from this inspiring method. Dr Adele Stewart has trained in MBSR with the Mindfulness Training Institute - Australia and New Zealand and is a Level II registered teacher. Adele did her first 10 day silent meditation retreat in 1987. She has had a regular mindfulness meditation, yoga and qigong practice for some years.
Our goal is to keep the course accessible to all those who could benefit. The full cost is $595 (all fees include GST). Full payment is generally required before the course begins. Those experiencing financial hardship are welcome to email Adele at email@example.com to discuss a discount or scholarship or payment plan. For regular practice patients the cost is $520, for those repeating the course the cost is $480, for Pension and Centrelink Health Card Card holders the cost is $420. MBSR courses are run for 8 Saturday afternoons at the practice (plus one Sunday all day retreat) usually coinciding with the school term.
The weekly sessions support the daily home practice of 45 - 60 minutes.
