Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course (MBSR)
MBSR brings the principles of mindfulness meditation into everyday life by teaching specific skills and practices that can be incorporated into daily life to help break cycles of anxiety, stress, unhappiness and exhaustion. All qualified MBSR teachers including Adele have a personal meditation and movement practice, and have undergone intensive teacher training.

How MBSR came about and the science behind it.
The MBSR course was first developed by Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. It has been widely researched over the past 30 years and is at the cutting edge of integrative and preventative medicine. It is the gold-standard of secular mindfulness based approaches for mental and physical health.and leads to measurable changes in brain regions associated with memory, sense of self, empathy, and stress as well as improving the immune response.

What do participants experience?
You spend quite a bit of time during the course really investigating your mind and body in the company of people whose lives and discoveries over the eight weeks give you something profound - a feeling of connection and belonging that you haven't felt for a while. You spend time listening deeply, not only to your own experience of sensations, thinking, feeling and action, but you get to know your patterns in a way that is tender and caring but also transforming. You find out that you can do things differently to make serious changes in how you experience your five-year-old, your boss, your insomnia, your pain, your anxiety, your depression. You discover both subtle and big changes in how you want to spend your time. You get some confidence in your own goodness and the goodness of others - which can be a rare experience these days.
How is MBSR different to other mindfulness courses?
MBSR courses offer depth, safety, continuity and connection with a highly trained, dedicated teacher to help you engage with the heart of the matter - so that you can find more resilience, effectiveness and authority in your life. While a short course, app or workshop may offer a taste of mindfulness, it is unlikely to provide you with the experience, space and time to develop your own practice, which is what leads to the outcomes you probably want and are truly possible from this inspiring method. Our goal is to keep the course accessible to all those who could benefit. The full cost is $595. For regular Woonona Medical Practice patients the cost is $520, for those repeating the course the cost is $480, for Pension and Centrelink Health Card Card holders the cost is $420. Those experiencing financial hardship are welcome to email Adele at to discuss a discount, scholarship or payment plan (and obtain a discount code).
Dates & Times
MBSR courses are run 2-3 times per year for 8 Saturday afternoons at Woonona Medical Practice (plus one Sunday all day retreat) usually coinciding with the school term. It is important to attend every session if at all possible. Zoom sessions are available if unwell or away.
The weekly sessions support the daily home practice of 45 - 60 minutes. The above research outcomes apply to participants who did home practice as well as attend the sessions.
